Comox, BC product joins Halifax for the remainder of the 2026 season

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Wednesday that midfielder Liam Mackenzie has been loaned to Canadian Premier League side Halifax Wanderers FC through the remainder of the 2026 season.

“Liam has done very well this year with WFC2 and Canada’s U-20 team,” said Axel Schuster. “This is a great opportunity for him to continue his development by training and playing at a good level with Halifax. We saw the benefits of Mihail Gherasimencov’s loan with CPL side Cavalry FC last year and how an experience like that can support a player’s development. Liam is at a similar stage in his career, and we believe this opportunity can provide another positive step in his progress.”

Former Whitecaps FC head coach Vanni Sartini is the current head coach and general manager at Halifax.

Mackenzie, 19, started all nine of his appearances and scored seven goals in MLS NEXT Pro this year for Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2).

The product of Comox, BC originally joined the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy as a 13-year-old in 2020 and became the 27th all-time academy player to sign an MLS contract with the 'Caps. His lone appearance for the first team came in his debut start against Chicago Fire FC in March 2025.

Internationally, Mackenzie has represented Canada at the U-17 and U-20 levels. He most recently helped Canada qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027 at the Concacaf U-20 Championship. Mackenzie started four of the five matches at the tournament, scoring three goals, including a brace in the quarterfinal victory over Jamaica. In 2023, Mackenzie started three of his five appearances at the Concacaf U-17 Championship, adding a goal and an assist as the team reached the semifinals of the tournament.
