MONTRÉAL, QC – It's time to Own the Summit.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC will go into the MLS Cup Playoffs on the back of three wins in a row after a 2-0 away victory over Canadian rivals CF Montréal on Decision Day.
Thanks to a second half goal from Cheikh Sabaly, and Mihail Gherasimencov’s first-ever MLS goal, Whitecaps FC (19W-7D-8L, 64 points) completed the regular season in style. The Blue and White finish atop the Western Conference, and second overall in MLS – only behind Nashville SC.
With three points taken, Whitecaps FC head coach Jesper Sørensen eclipsed all previous MLS head coaches in the record books. The Great Dane leapt over Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino to set a an MLS record for the most points by a head coach in his first two MLS seasons – 127 for Sørensen compared to 124 for Martino.

After a scoreless first half, the match came to life in the opening moments of the second half.
Whitecaps FC came out strong and nearly opened the scoring. Sabaly cleanly beat Keita – only to ring the ball off the crossbar.
On a counterattack, CF Montréal substitute Noah Streit came just as close. In tight, he tried to lob Takaoka, only to clang off the woodwork.
Sabaly would not be denied on his next chance. Gauld gained possession to send a diagonal through ball for Sabaly. His low strike forced Keita into a desperate parry. Sabaly collected the rebound and cleanly switched from his right boot to his left. The 27-year-old Senegalese international hit it into the top corner for 1-0.
Seven minutes from time, sub Bruno Caicedo sent in Gherasimencov free and clear. The 21-year-old left back drew Keita off his line before launching a rocket across the net to salt the match away.
At the final whistle, Takaoka was ahead by a half-century. He notched his 50th Whitecaps FC clean sheet, now only a single clean sheet behind Paul Dolan with the club record of 51.
