WEEKLY STORYLINES
TOP OF THE WEST SHOWDOWN: Following their first leg clash with Miami, Vancouver Whitecaps FC return to MLS action on Sunday with another key clash at the top of the Western Conference against third-placed Minnesota United FC. Vancouver enters Matchday 10 leading the MLS Supporters' Shield with 20 points (6W-1L-2D) - extending their best-ever start to a regular season - which is four points ahead of Minnesota as well as second-placed Austin FC in the Western Conference standings. The 'Caps previous visit to Allianz Field saw them claim a 3-1 victory over the Loons thanks to goals from Brian White, MathÃas Laborda, and Sebastian Berhalter. They'll be looking to repeat the feat on Sunday and further extend their unbeaten road record (2W-0L-2D) in MLS play this season.
DEFENSIVE PROWESS: The Blue and White have enjoyed a productive start to the season at both ends of the pitch, leading the way in goals scored in MLS play with 17 and sitting tied for the least goals conceded in the league with six. The attack has gotten it's attention but make no mistake, Jesper Sørensen's defensive setup deserves to be commended just as much. To back it up, the 'Caps have allowed the least shots on target against in the league with 22, are tied for the lowest expected goals conceded with 8.1, and are tied for the most clean sheets in league play with five. The Blue and White have also kept two clean sheets in Concacaf Champions Cup play this season. With his previous shutout, goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka equalled Phil Parkes for fourth all-time in clean sheets for the club with 26.
ONTO LEG TWO: In front of an MLS-era club record crowd of 53,837, the 'Caps produced a thrilling 2-0 victory over Inter Miami CF in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal, handing the Herons their second defeat of the season and shutting them out in the process. Brian White scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season, while Sebastian Berhalter netted a crucial second in the latter stages of the match. But the job's not done yet, as it's only the first 90 minutes of the semifinals. The 'Caps will look to put together a similar performance as they carry a two-goal advantage heading into the decisive second leg on Wednesday, April 30 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
