The Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy U-16 boys have had a great season, and that season concludes in the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs in Nashville, Tennessee. The 'Caps showed just how good they are, but ultimately were eliminated in an epic Round of 16 match.
Round of 31 vs. Indy Eleven - Saturday, June 14
The 'Caps faced a tough game against a well organized, resolute Indy side who defended low and were a challenge to break down.
Despite significantly dominating possession and creating good chances, Whitecaps FC fell behind to a set piece late in the game.
However, head coach Ross Kenny's side continued to create chances, scoring three goals from Hunter MacGowan, Ryder Sewell, and Tyler Brown in the last 10 minutes to win 3-1.
Round of 16 vs. Inter Miami CF - Monday, June 16
In a tight, back and forth game, Whitecaps FC created the better chances and always looked dangerous in attacking transition while limiting Miami to very little goal threat. However, it can be a cruel game.
The 'Caps took the lead courtesy of a header from Jayden Kim, glancing it to the back post from a fantastic Jamil Abubakar free kick.
Whitecaps FC went 2-0 up around the 60-minute mark from a Ryder Sewell penalty kick.
At 2-0, Miami threw everything forward to get back into the game, drawing level from the penalty spot before taking a 3-2 lead in injury time.
The boys continued to battle and create chances, which was rewarded deep into injury time following a great run from Jesse Peace, delivering a low, driven cross that was met at the back post for a tap in from Tyler Brown.
The game went straight to a shootout, and unfortunately the 'Caps were on the wrong side of a 4-2 defeat, bringing a valiant playoff run to an end.
