Thomas Müller is the all-time leader in assists for the German national team (41), and second all-time in goal contributions (86). Timo Werner is one of the top 20 all-time goalscorers for the German national team, sitting tied for 18th with 24.

The two accomplished Die Mannschaft players are expected to go head-to-head for the first time since January 20, 2023 when Müller and Vancouver Whitecaps FC host Werner’s San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place this Saturday.

Teammates

As teammates, Müller and Werner shared the pitch 23 times for Germany, and were teammates at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020.

Werner made his German national team debut on March 22, 2017 in a friendly against England. He was subbed off for Müller in the 77th minute.

While the two combined to generate a number of highlights, Müller is on the record officially recording an assist on three of Werner’s goals for Germany:

  • Twice in a 6-0 World Cup qualifying win over Norway on September 4, 2017
  • Once in a 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over North Macedonia on  October 11, 2021
