VANCOUVER, BC - Back at the top.
There's never been a better start to an MLS regular season campaign for Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Until now.
Through eight matches, the 'Caps sit at the summit of the Supporters' Shield standings thanks to their MLS era club-record 7W-1L-0D start to the season for a total of 21 points.
Every victory has shown the Blue and White can win in different ways on any given day. Whether it be grinding a result, scoring batches of goals, or coming from behind, the mentality of head coach Jesper Sørensen and his team has been on full display to begin the year, drawing praise from many.
It's a mentality the group has had since Sørensen walked through the doors of the club for the first time. And much like last year, the 'Caps see themselves as a true contender that sits at the top of several statistical categories.
Through the opening eight matchdays of the season, the Blue and White are leading the way in both boxes.
The 'Caps lead MLS in goals scored with 22 and have conceded only four goals, one shy of the lowest mark in the league shared by Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquakes (three). In fact, the 'Caps are just the second team in MLS history to score at least 22 goals within the first eight games, joining the 1998 Los Angeles Galaxy. But that's just part of the story. Once you dig deeper into the stats, they back up just how good of a start the 'Caps have made to the regular season.
In addition to goals scored, Vancouver sits at the top of five more major offensive statistics in the league, including expected goals (22.1), shots (140), big chances created (38), set-piece goals (9), and touches in the opposition's box (285).
Perhaps even more impressive has been the success the 'Caps have had on the defensive side of the game, as they hold the least expected goals conceded (4.60) and the least shots conceded (62) in the league thus far. That effort has been reflected in clean sheets, where they sit tied for second in MLS with five. The 'Caps have also shown their ability to pressure the ball at will, tallying the second-best tackles per match (18.8) in the league.
Both the offensive and defensive output on display by Vancouver is balanced out by the best expected goals difference (17.5) and their league-leading +18 goal differential, which has them at the top of the Supporters' Shield standings.
A big reason why Sørensen has enjoyed plenty of success with Vancouver is his commitment to setting the tone.
This season in MLS play, the 'Caps have posted a perfect 7W-0L-0D record when scoring first. If you include Sørensen's full tenure with the club, it extends to an unbeaten record of 24W-0L-4D in MLS play. The 'Caps also remain unbeaten under the Dane when leading at halftime (19W-0L-3D).
This season, the key intervals for the 'Caps have been between minutes 1-15 of matches (4 goals - tied for league best) as well as minutes 16-30 of matches (5 goals - tied for league best).
Usually, that sort of production and hard work during first halves has led to high-scoring matches under Sørensen, with Vancouver scoring three or more goals in 21 of 65 matches during his tenure (32%).
With all the success of the team, comes individual success. It's been a key ingredient to the Sørensen era - getting contributions from everyone on the field.
Last year, an MLS era club-record 29 different players recorded either a goal or assist. That trend has continued in 2026, with 14 players already contributing to goals this season across all competitions. In MLS play alone, the 'Caps are tied for the league lead in individual goalscorers with 10.
Leading the way has been United States international Sebastian Berhalter, who is tied for third in goal contributions in MLS play this season with eight (three goals, five assists). The box-to-box midfielder is also tied for the league-lead in expected assists (2.90) and is third in chances created (23), all while sitting one assist away from reaching 50 goal contributions across all competitions for Whitecaps FC (17 goals, 32 assists).
Brian White has also had a productive start to the year, with his six goals in MLS play placing him in a tie for third, while leading the league in expected goals (7.60) and shots on target (18).
In addition, Thomas Müller and Mathías Laborda have improved their career tallies with the club in the opening weeks of the season. Müller, who has four goals this year, is now at 14 goal contributions (11 goals, three assists) in 15 MLS appearances with the 'Caps. Laborda, who's scored twice already, now sits as the second highest-scoring defender in the club's MLS era with 11 goals.
Defensively, the influence of Paraguayan international Andrés Cubas continues to be a key piece of the team's success. Through 611 minutes of action across all competitions, the 'Caps have not conceded a goal with Cubas on the pitch this season. He also leads MLS in tackles (28) and has improved his record when starting with the 'Caps to 60W-37L-36D across all competitions.
Lastly, Yohei Takaoka's seven clean sheets across all competitions have etched him closer to becoming the club's MLS era leader (42), sitting four away from surpassing David Ousted's current record (45).
The Blue and White will aim to continue building on their impressive start to the year this Saturday, April 25 against Colorado Rapids in their final home match at BC Place ahead of this summer's FIFA World Cup 2026™. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT. The club has surpassed 23,000 tickets sold for the match, with this weekend set to mark the 19th consecutive MLS match featuring a crowd of over 20,000 at BC Place.
