BURNABY, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 made it two home wins in a week thanks to a thrilling 5-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City II on Sunday afternoon at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC. The result keeps the young 'Caps mathematically alive in the race for the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs.
WFC2 head coach Rich Fagan welcomed a new face to his starting XI. First team defender Sebastián Ramírez made his WFC2 and MLS NEXT Pro debut by slotting in at centre back for the young 'Caps.
The early energetic possession from Fagan's side led to a Micaah Garnette corner kick. Off the set piece, midfielder Valter Sedin nodded the ball towards the near post for Cristiano Bruletti, who's split-second reflexes made a difficult pivot and subsequent backheel flick look easy. He opened the home side’s account with a beautiful finish past SKC II goalkeeper Jack Kortkamp for the 1-0 lead.
Shortly after, Sedin received a cheeky flick-on from Yuma Tsuji deep in the attacking third that led to a powerful 16-yard attempt that Kortkamp parried aside.
In first-half added time, Sedin notched his second assist. He slipped a through ball ahead for Carson Rassak, who weaved past defenders before smashing the ball inside the near post to make it 2-0.
After play resumed, substitute Manav Badwal took advantage of lax defending to set up speedy Johnny Selemani. In a diagonal sprint, Selemani shrugged off the SKC II backline before a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
The young ’Caps salted the match away off a Cristiano Bruletti corner. The ball pinwheeled inside the area to WFC2 captain Trevor Wright, who went skyward to nod home the Blue and White's fourth of the day.
SKC II forward Missael Rodríguez spoiled WFC2 goalkeeper Sam Rogers’s bid for a clean sheet seven minutes from time.
Selemani then grabbed his brace in stunning fashion as he turned two SKC defenders at the top of the box and unleashed a belting, left-footed strike into the top corner past Kortkamp.
